Kathleen Norris (poet)

Kathleen Norris (born July 27, 1947 in Washington, DC , USA ) is an American author and poet.

Life

As a child, Norris moved with her parents to Hawai'i , where she graduated from Punahou School before going to Bennington College in Bennington , Vermont , New England . After graduating from this art school in 1969, she went to New York City to manage the art collection of the Academy of American Poets , where she published her first volume of poetry, Falling Off , in 1971 .

In 1974, Norris, South Dakota, inherited her grandparents' farm in Lemmon . She moved with her husband to the 1000 souls village, participated in church life and immersed herself in the living conditions on the vastness of the prairie . She described the impressions there in 1993 in her book Dakota: A Spiritual Geography . She later became a Benedictine oblate at an abbey in Richardton, North Dakota, and made several extended stays at Saint John's Abbey in Collegeville , Minnesota , which are reflected in her book The Cloister Walk .

In the past few years Norris has written several works on spirituality and religion. She has lived in Hawai'i again since her husband's death in 2003 and returns from time to time for lecture tours to the 48 mainland states of the USA. She writes regularly for Christian magazines, including The Christian Century of Chicago , Illinois .
