The Catholic Theological Faculty of Tübingen was incorporated into the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen in 1817 ; it had previously existed since 1812 as Friedrichs-Universität Ellwangen .

history

After the secularization of the prince provosty Ellwangen in the years 1802-1803 was determined by the Württemberg King Friedrich I. Ellwangen as the seat of a Catholic regional bishop for New Württemberg. As a result, a general vicariate , the Catholic-theological Friedrichs University and a Catholic seminary were founded by decree in September 1812 . In December of the same year, all facilities were able to start operations.

As a result of a change of government in 1816, the theological faculty from Ellwangen was incorporated into Tübingen as the Catholic theological faculty of the Eberhard Karls University in the winter semester 1817/1818 . The vicariate general was relocated to Rottenburg, the Wilhelmsstift in Tübingen and the seminary in Rottenburg were re-established . A Catholic diocese was established there in 1821 due to its more central location in Württemberg and its proximity to the seat of government in Stuttgart .

Since it was founded in 1817, the Tübingen Catholic Theological Faculty has produced a number of important theologians, including Johann Sebastian von Drey , who founded the Catholic School in Tübingen in 1819 , Johann Adam Möhler and Johann Baptist von Hirscher . The focus on historical criticism combines with systematic-speculative thinking the examination of the present, philosophy and theology. This own theological style still determines the problems and the teaching of teaching today. She is in close contact with the Protestant sister faculty . Understanding between the two churches is a central concern of the Institute for Ecumenical Research .

Chairs

The subject of theology encompasses a variety of disciplines that are delimited in terms of method and content and which are divided into departments:

Practical training

In Tübingen, theological education is largely carried out by the Catholic faculty of the university. The Wilhelmsstift and the Theological Mentorat work in accompanying scientific events, so-called repetitions, to train religious teachers, diocesan theologians and pastoral officers .

Pastoral qualifications, which are listed in the framework ratio nationalis as a task of the faculty, are conveyed by the Wilhelmsstift through internships and excursions. These include assignments in hospitals, in youth work, in an industrial internship and in a parish.
