Catholic Encyclopedia
The Catholic Encyclopedia ( English for Catholic Encyclopedia is) a published in 1913, in the English language authored reference . The aim was to provide a broad public with comprehensive information about the theory, doctrine and practice of the Catholic faith as well as well-founded information on history, especially on church history . A new edition appeared in 1922.

In the foreword of the original edition it says:
“The Catholic Encyclopedia, as its name implies, proposes to give its readers full and authoritative information on the entire cycle of Catholic interests, action and doctrine. What the Church teaches and has taught; what she has done and is still doing for the highest welfare of mankind; her methods, past and present; her struggles, her triumphs, and the achievements of her members, not only for her own immediate benefit, but for the broadening and deepening of all true science, literature and art - all come within the scope of the Catholic Encyclopedia. "
“The Catholic Encyclopedia, as its name suggests, aims to provide its readers with a wealth of complete and reliable information on all subjects of Catholic interests, practices, and teachings. What the Church teaches and has taught; what she has done and still does for the greatest good of humanity; their past and present approaches; their struggles, their triumphs, and the special achievements of their members; not just to take advantage of it quickly, but to spread and deepen all true sciences, literature and art - all of this falls within the competence of the Catholic Encyclopedia. "
The Catholic Encyclopedia is also widely used as a source in the academic and academic fields because it also provides a large number of historical facts.
Authors
Work on the Catholic Encyclopedia began on January 11, 1905, under the direction of five expert editors:
- Charles George Herbermann , Latin professor and librarian at City College of New York
- Edward A. Pace, Professor of Philosophy at the Catholic University of America
- Condé B. Pallen, editor
- Thomas J. Shahan, Professor of Church History at the Catholic University of America
- John J. Wynne SJ , editor of The Messenger
The authors sat down for the first time in the editorial office of The Messenger in New York ; the work was completed on April 19, 1913.
New Catholic Encyclopedia
In 1967 a new edition of the Catholic Encyclopedia was published on behalf of the Catholic University of America in Washington DC, which comprised 15 volumes; Supplements appeared in the following years. In 2002/2003 a second revised edition of the New Catholic Encyclopedia was published.
