Charles George Herbermann , born as Karl Georg Herbermann (born December 8, 1840 in Saerbeck , Münsterland , Westphalia , † August 24, 1916 in Manhattan , New York ) was an American classical philologist and writer of German origin.

Life

Charles Herbermann was the son of Georg Herbermann and his wife Elisabeth Stipp. When the family's fate did not change for the better after the revolution of 1848/49 , Herbermann and his family hoped for a better new start in the United States . They reached New York in 1851, where the family settled.

Herbermann completed his school years at the College of St. Francis Xavier in New York and then studied at the College of the City of New York . In 1869 he was appointed professor of the Latin language and Latin literature there . He held this office until his retirement in 1916. At the same time, he also worked there as a librarian between 1873 and 1914.

As a devout and critical Catholic, Herbermann dealt with the Catholic faith throughout his life and was also involved in church social institutions for years. He was one of the first members of the Catholic Club of New York and headed it as its president in 1874/75. In the Catholic Historical Society he was also a member and between 1898 and 1913 its board of directors.

Herbermann was the chief editor for the Catholic Encyclopedia . For this he was honored by Pope Pius X in 1909 with the Knightly Order of St. George and four years later with the Order of Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice .

In the course of 1916, Herbermann resigned from all his offices and retired into private life. He died that same year and found his final resting place in New York.
