Katrin Heichel
Katrin Brause , occasionally artist name Katrin Heichel (* 1972 in Leipzig ) is a painter and graphic artist . She belongs to the younger generation of the New Leipzig School .
Life
Katrin Brause was born in Leipzig and grew up there. After attending school and training, she carried out various activities. Among other things, she worked for a restorer and in the diakonia of an evangelical free church. Their daughter, the actress Bérénice Brause, was born in 1992. In 2000 she began studying painting / graphics at the University of Graphic Arts and Book Art in Leipzig, from 2002 in Arno Rink's class , which she graduated with a diploma in 2005. From 2005 to 2008 she was in the master class with Neo Rauch (postgraduate studies), which she finished in 2008 with the title of master class.
As an artist, Katrin Brause became known under the name Katrin Heichel, in 2018 she decided to take her maiden name Brause again.
Katrin Brause lives and works in Leipzig.
plant
The works follow thematic cycles (for example 'Votive and Honey'), the content of which is predominantly focused on people with their sensitivities and self-image. Among other things, she uses attributes of the forms of expression and communication in Western culture and their iconography .
“The importance of materiality is just as recurring in Katrin Heichel's work, as is her motivic tendency to use popular visual worlds or profane, brittle objects in her pictures. In their synthesis, both levels reveal the underlying purpose of upgrading the aesthetic 'stepchildren' through the sensual surface, so that they appear like treasures. "
While in her earlier works she often instrumentalized the self-portrait as a projection surface, the direct image of the human being has meanwhile given way to the principle of “presence despite absence”. She is currently interested in legacies such as tools, traces of work, what has been worn, left behind, and lost. In this way, the works create a portrait of human plans and faults.
