The Renner department store was Dresden's largest department store until it was destroyed in February 1945 . It was located on the south side of the Altmarkt and extended over several former town houses that were connected to one another inside.

At times up to 1200 employees worked in the department store. It was best known for its sixty shop windows and the first escalator in Dresden.

The Renner family were relatives of the Dresden lawyer and later Senator Renner and his wife, who became known as Schiller's " Gustel von Blasewitz ".

history

Johann Traugott Adolph Renner opened a cloth and manufacture shop in Badergasse in 1854 . The branch was later expanded to the first floor. Further extensions followed.

After the business had moved to the Altmarkt, all town houses on the south side of the Altmarkt, with the exception of the corner house on Seestrasse , were gradually acquired. The interiors of the buildings taken over were completely redesigned; the facades remained largely unchanged. The two opposite houses on Schreibergasse were connected by a walkway.

In 1896 the founder's two sons, Gustav Adolph and Martin, became co-owners of the department store.

In 1925, the Renner bus lines came into being as part of the special sales weeks. Three different lines ran from Plauen , Blasewitz and Lincke'schen Bad to the Altmarkt.

At last, the department store consisted of a total of twelve buildings. After the complete destruction in 1945, Herbert Renner reopened a shop on Königsbrücker Straße .
