Kaupanger is a Norwegian village with 825 inhabitants. It is located in Amla Bay on the Sognefjord between Lærdal and Sogndal .

history

In the early Middle Ages there was a market square ( kaupang "trading place"), which developed into the first city in Western Norway. In 1184, however, Kaupanger was completely destroyed by King Sverre after the residents refused to hold a free party for his deputy Magnus.

Attractions

The most important sight of the city is the Kaupanger stave church , which was built around 1200 and is the third oldest stave church in Norway. Due to the paneling from the 17th century and due to renovation measures in 1862, the character of a stave church can hardly be seen from the outside, but inside 20 wooden pillars show the original structure.

The town also has the Sogn Fjord Museum with old boats and fishing tools, as well as the Sogn Folke Museum , an open-air museum that is well worth seeing with 35 originally furnished houses from four centuries of Norwegian history.
