Kavaratti ( Malayalam കവരത്തി Kavaratti ) is the third largest island with 4.22 km² and the seat of the administration of the Indian Union Territory Lakshadweep in the Arabian Sea . The approximately 6 kilometers long and 1 kilometer wide atoll island belongs to the Laccadive archipelago and has around 11,000 inhabitants (calculation; as of January 1, 2007).
Almost all of Kavaratti's residents are Muslim - there are 52 mosques on the small island - and speak a dialect of Malayalam as well as meal and English . However, of all the islands in Lakshadweeps, Kavaratti has the largest proportion of Indians who have immigrated from other parts of the country.
