Kazuo Miyagawa

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Kazuo Miyagawa ( Japanese. 宮 川 一夫 , actually: 宮 川 一 雄 , both Miyagawa Kazuo ; born February 25, 1908 in Kyōto , Japan ; † August 7, 1999 in Tokyo , ibid) was a Japanese cameraman who was "for several decades the most important image designer of the domestic post-war cinemas ”.

Live and act

Miyagawa trained in Japanese ink painting before joining the film industry in 1925. First he worked in the laboratory of the Nikkatsu production company in Kyoto . In 1930 he received his first job as a simple cameraman, five years later he was allowed to work as chief cameraman for the first time. Out of the abundance of Miyagawa's work, the pictorial designs of some of the top productions by important directors such as Kenji Mizoguchi , Akira Kurosawa , Yasujiro Ozu and Kon Ichikawa stand out. Impressed by the play of light and shadow in Expressionist film art in Germany in the 1920s, Kazuo Miyagawa demonstrated his great talent for creating moods. The bleaching effect, which he helped to develop and which Ichikawas Ototo used for the first time in 1960, also had some significance in Miyagawa's pictorial compositions.

His camera work on Kurosawa's masterpiece Rashomon - The Lustwäldchen brought the Japanese film world recognition for the first time in 1950. Miyagawa's later works, such as Ugetsu - Tales under the Rain Moon , The Legend of the Master of Scroll Pictures , Kagi and Yojimbo - The Bodyguard , which were able to assert themselves on the international market, ensured the great reputation of Japanese films of the 1950s and 1960s. Most recently, he mainly photographed the works of director Masahiro Shinoda, who is celebrated as a “young and wild” . With a German-Japanese co-production filmed in Berlin in 1988, the 80-year-old image designer ended his career after about 135 films he had shot. Kazuo Miyagawa, who was honored with a wealth of prizes for his cinematic achievements from 1953 until his death, also taught at the Osaka Art School .
