Keagan Girdlestone (born April 30, 1997 in Pretoria ) is a South African - New Zealand cyclist .

Keagan Girdlestone comes from a cycling family, his father and older brother Dylan are also active cyclists. In 2012 he became the South African road champion for under 16s. His family then moved to Christchurch , New Zealand , where he won two other national titles in his age group.

In March 2014, Girdlestone won the renowned New Zealand road race Le Race over 100 kilometers from Christchurch to Akaroa , which is feared because of its gradients, and at the age of 16 became the youngest winner of this race, in which 800 drivers started. Second in the race was 42-year-old Aaron Strong , a seasoned cyclist who won the bronze medal in the individual time trial at the Oceanic Cycling Championships in 2005, and third was Daniel Whitehouse , who had finished fourth in the New Zealand Cycle Classic a few weeks earlier .

On June 5, 2016, Keagan Girdlestone crashed into an escort vehicle during the one-day race Coppa della Pace and sustained serious head injuries. Italian media initially reported his death, this false report was corrected a little later. According to an October 2016 report, Girdlestrone was on a long road to recovery; his right half of his body is partially paralyzed. He started training again in November 2016, and in January 2017 he finished a race for the first time, although he is still physically impaired. In March 2017, he competed in an elite race for the first time since his fall. In October 2018, he reported that he repeatedly suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder while cycling .
