Kediet Ijill , also called Kediet ej Jill , is the highest mountain in Mauritania with a height of 915 meters . In the plain east of the Kediet Ijill lies the town of Zouérat , the capital of the administrative unit Tiris Zemmour . To the west is F'dérik . The rocks are blue-gray in color because the rock contains various iron oxides such as magnetite .

First plans in the 1930s to exploit the iron ore deposits in what was then French West Africa were prevented by the Second World War . In 1963, iron ore mining began in the meanwhile independent Mauritania. The 700 km long Nouadhibou – M'Haoudat railway to the port city of Nouadhibou was built to transport the ore .

The iron deposits of Kediet Ijill influence the earth's magnetic field in the area and thus the deflection of compass needles .
