Rhynchosporium secalis is a species of the hose fungus (Ascomycota) from the class of the Helotiales . Rhynchosporium secalis causes Rhynchosporium leaf spot disease in barley , rye and triticale .

The disease manifests itself in spindle-shaped, blue-green, but quickly gray-white discolouring spots of up to 2 cm in size, which lead to yellowing and death of the entire leaf.

Way of life

The spores germinate after 24 hours of wetness. 1 hour after the start of the infection, the germ tube is formed, which thickens to form the appressorium . After penetrating the cuticle , the fungus grows along the cell sutures. Fungal hyphae are only found in the mesophyll of the leaf in the late stage of infection . About 10 days after the inoculation , the epidermal cells collapse, which shows up as a gray-white lesion (described above).

The spores are spread via raindrops. Because of this form of distribution, Rhynchosporium leaf spot disease is relatively localized and the infestation initially occurs in nests.

The greatest economic damage is caused by Rhynchosporium secalis in barley.
