Valley rafters

Designations on the roof

A valley rafter is built into a wooden roof structure when two roof surfaces meet in a valley . The valley rafter has similar properties as the hip rafter , only the trimming and the claws (mouth) differ in appearance. The burr here is called the valley and extends the roof surfaces to the middle of the valley rafter (valley line).

If the joists are connected to the valley rafters, they do not run from the base purlin to the rafter, as with the hip rafter, but from the ridge purlin to the valley rafter.

As an alternative to the valley rafter, a plank foundation can also be used.
