The Keichō-Nankaidō earthquake ( Japanese 慶 長 地震 , Keichō jishin ) was an earthquake that occurred on February 3, 1605 ( traditionally : Keichō 9/12/16) around 8 p.m. east of Japan . This was followed by a tsunami that hit the south coast of Honshū ( Nankaidō and Tōkaidō regions ) and the coast of Kyūshū . Several thousand fatalities are assumed.
