Earthquakes are common in Japan . The cause is the movement of the tectonic plates in the lithosphere , which meet in the vicinity of Japan. The Japanese trench is one of the consequences of subduction . In particular, there is concern about an earthquake in Tokyo . The Tōhoku earthquake of March 11, 2011 is considered to be the worst earthquake in Japan to date .

On average, there are 73 earthquakes with magnitude 4 or higher in Japan per month, of which 9 with a magnitude 5 or higher and 1.4 with a magnitude 6 or higher.
