The Shōwa-Sanriku earthquake ( Japanese 昭和 三 陸 地震 , Shōwa Sanriku jishin ) was an earthquake that occurred on March 2, 1933 ( Shōwa 8) 290 km east of Japan . This was followed by a tsunami with a wave height of up to 28.7 m, which hit the Sanriku coast . In Japan, around 3,000 houses were completely destroyed and another 2,000 were damaged.
