The Meiji Sanriku earthquake ( Japanese 明治 三 陸 地震 , Meiji Sanriku jishin ) occurred on June 15, 1896 ( Meiji 29) off the coast of Japan at around 19:32 local time. About half an hour later, a tsunami up to 25 m high hit the Sanriku coast on the northeastern part of the island of Honshu . Over 27,000 people perished.
In California, the tsunami reached a height of 3 m.
Due to the severity of the earthquake and tsunami, tsunami research was intensified in Japan.
Similar devastating earthquakes at the same location were the Jōgan-Sanriku earthquake in 869 , the Keichō-Sanriku earthquake in 1611 , the Shōwa-Sanriku earthquake in 1933 and the Tōhoku earthquake in 2011 .
