The Keichō-Sanriku earthquake ( Japanese 慶 長 三 陸 地震 , Keichō Sanriku jishin ) occurred on December 2, 1611 ( traditional date : Keichō 16/10/28) east of Japan . Subsequently, a tsunami hit the Sanriku coast . About 5,000 people were killed. The maximum wave height of 25 m was reached in Yamada and Tarō . The wave reached up to 4 km inland.
Similar devastating earthquakes at the same location were the Jōgan-Sanriku earthquake in 869 , the Meiji-Sanriku earthquake in 1896 , the Shōwa-Sanriku earthquake in 1933 and the Tōhoku earthquake in 2011 .
