Kelia Moniz

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Kelia Moniz (born February 5, 1993 in Oʻahu , Hawaii ), also known as "Sister" by friends and family, is a Hawaiian surfer , two-time WSL world champion in longboard surfing and a model at Roxy .

Life

Moniz grew up in a surfing family with four brothers, where she and her siblings were homeschooled by their mother instead of attending school. Her father Tony Moniz is a well-known big wave surfer and has surfed at a professional level for 30 years. At the age of five Kelia Moniz started surfing on her own initiative, without pressure from her father, although she only got her own surfboard at the age of 10.

Usually Moniz surfs longboards; but in order to keep up with her brothers, she also learned shortboard surfing . When she was 13, she was signed to Roxy as a shortboarder, but that didn't last long and she wasn't able to return to Roxy until she was 16, this time as a longboarder.

She got her nickname "Sister" because she is like a sister to all her friends, Moniz suspects in an interview with ESPN.
