The Kelston toll road was a temporary 365 meter long, privately and unauthorized toll road between Bath and Kelston , 9.5 miles southeast of Bristol in Bath and North East Somerset , United Kingdom . It ran north to the A431 , Kelston Road, which was closed due to a landslide on February 17, 2014. Since the closure would last until the end of 2014, the road was released on August 1, 2014 for the toll of GBP 2  and vehicles with a maximum total weight of 3.5  t . It was built under the direction of the 62-year-old entrepreneur Mike Watts based on an idea from his wife. The toll booth did not have a barrier . Without the toll road, the detour for vehicles would be up to 16 kilometers. By the beginning of October, the road had been used by a total of 100,000 vehicles. The construction cost was £ 150,000. Another GBP 150,000 cost the toll station, maintenance and operation. The western end of the road was 51 ° 23 '46 "  N , 2 ° 25' 19"  W , the eastern end of the road at 51 ° 23 '45 "  N , 2 ° 25' 3"  W .

In September Watts applied for a subsequent building permit from the County Council (Bath and North East Somerset Council). This was decided on October 3rd and the decision was published at the end of the month. The permit was refused. Watts was reportedly losing money as the A431 reopened earlier than expected after investing an additional £ 660,000 to prevent another slide. The District Administrator filed a tax claim of £ 3,000 against Watts.

With the reopening of the A431 on November 17, 2014, the Kelston toll road was closed. Watts said his venture had lost roughly £ 10,000 to £ 15,000 by a rough estimate. The Kelston toll road was dismantled in the following six months so that nothing reminds of it.

According to reports, Watts Strasse caused possible damage to the monuments of medieval cultivated terraces . In the course of the dismantling, archaeological investigations should take place to determine the type and cause of possible damage.
