The Kendal Mint Cake is a sweet product consisting mainly of sugar with a peppermint flavor . The name is based on the original place of manufacture in Kendal , United Kingdom . The dessert is best known as an energy source for hikers and mountaineers from the United Kingdom.

history

The origins of the Kendal Mint Cake are said to go back to the confectionery manufacturer Joseph Wiper. In 1869, while making mint candy, he accidentally allowed the mixture to simmer overnight. The next morning it had solidified, but was still edible. From then on, he continued to make the mint cake and imitators were quickly found. His company was later bought by Romney's. The original recipe consists of sugar, glucose syrup, water and peppermint oil and is still made in this form today.

The success as a source of energy for hikers and mountaineers is mainly based on the fact that Sir Ernest Shackleton counted sweets as an indispensable part of the ration on his endurance expedition . The same was true for Edmund Hillary , who had it with him on the first ascent of Mount Everest.

The confectionery was also mentioned in the documentary Long Way Round about Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman's motorcycle trip from London via Russia to New York.

The main producers today are Quiggin's, Romney's and Wilson's.
