In 2003 Fujimoto published his memoir Kimu Jon'iru no ryōrinin - majika de mita kenryokusha no sugao ( 金正日の 料理 人 - 間 近 で 見 た 権 力 者 の 素 顔 , dt. About "Kim Jong-Ils Koch - The unvarnished face of a ruler viewed up close “, in English: I was Kim Jong Il's Cook , in German: I was Kim Jong-il's cook), in which he describes details about his experiences with Kim Jong-il.

Shortly after taking office, he became a companion of Kim Jong-il. Both went shooting, horse riding and water skiing together, according to Kenji. He escaped from North Korea in 2001 by pretending to get sea urchins for Kim on Hokkaidō and never returned. Since his escape he has lived under an alias in an unknown place. He is considered a "Kim Jong-il expert".
