Kenneth Stokoe

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Kenneth H. Stokoe II (* around 1944 ) is an American civil engineer who specializes in geotechnical engineering and is a professor at the University of Texas at Austin .

Stokoe graduated from the University of Michigan with a bachelor's degree in 1966 and a master's degree in 1967, where he received his doctorate in civil engineering in 1972. In 1972 he became an assistant professor at the University of Massachusetts and in 1972 at the University of Texas at Austin, where he later became a professor.

In 1987 he was visiting professor at the University of Naples.

Stokoe dealt with the application of geophysical methods (seismology) in the ground exploration also offshore as well as with offshore geotechnics, non-destructive measurements z. B. of roads and runways with a deflectometer developed by him (RDD, Rolling Dynamic Deflectometer), geodynamics (dynamic behavior of soils, e.g. during earthquakes) and dynamic pile analysis.

With the RDD, the road condition is assessed by continuously applying sinusoidal dynamic forces with a modified Vibroseis truck and at the same time measuring the deflection of the lane generated by several sensors on the truck.

He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering . He is a member of ASCE, the Seismological Society of America, and the Society of Exploration Geophysicists.

In 2011 he gave the Terzaghi Lecture .
