Kenya Seed Company

Kenya Seed Company is a public agricultural company headquartered in Kitale . It sells seeds for maize , wheat , barley , sorghum and millet millet , pasture grass , sunflower and horticultural crops.

history

Kenya Seed was founded in 1956 to distribute the pasture grass seeds developed by the National Research Station in Kitale . Two years later, the company began the commercial production of sunflowers for the European bird feed market . In 1963 maize hybrid seeds were produced for the first time, which was developed by the research station in Kitale. In 1971 wheat seeds were added.

In 1979, Kenya Seed acquired Simpson and White Law (now Simlaw Seed Company), a producer of horticultural seeds, pesticides and fertilizers . In 2002, the seed companies Kibo Seed Company ( Tanzania ) and Mt Elgon Seed Company ( Uganda ) were taken over.

75 percent of the seeds used in Kenya come from the Kenya Seed Company.
