Various regional political parties with a focus on the southern Indian state of Kerala operate under the name Kerala Congress ( KC , Malayalam കേരള കോൺഗ്രസ് ) . The Kerala Congress (Mani) can be regarded as today's main successor party to the historic Kerala Congress, founded in 1964 .

Party history

The party, called the Kerala Congress , was founded in October 1964 by former members of the Indian National Congress under the leadership of KM George . Her traditional focus was in the Travancore region in Kerala, where especially Thomas Christians are among her followers. In the party, however, all social classes and religions were represented. Above all, she campaigned for the special regional concerns of Kerala and, according to her own admission, for the “working classes”.

In the course of the party's history there were multiple splits from individual groups, which then retained the name Kerala Congress . For this reason, the name of the respective chairman, the abbreviation of the name or an attribute in brackets are usually added to differentiate. In analogy to this, the original Kerala Congress was also referred to as the Kerala Congress (Joseph) or Kerala Congress (J) after the last chairman PJ Joseph .

The largest (partly only temporary) splits from the original Kerala Congress are or were:

  • Kerala Congress (Mani) or Kerala Congress (M) , KC (M), under KM Mani (split off in 1969, reunited with the original Kerala Congress in 2010)
  • Kerala Congress (Balakrishna Pillai) or Kerala Congress (B) , KC (B), under R. Balakrishna Pillai
  • Kerala Congress (Jacob) , KC (J), under Johnny Nellore (split in 1993)
  • Kerala Congress (Secular) , KC (G), under PC George (merged with Kerala Congress (M) in 2009 )
  • Kerala Congress (Socialist) , KC (S), a spin-off from Kerala Congress (Secular) (joined Janata Dal (Secular) in 2010 )
  • Kerala Congress (Nationalist) , KC (N), a spin-off from Kerala Congress (M)

The various splinter groups have joined party coalitions, some of which are opposing. For example, the Kerala Congress (Socialist) was part of the Left Front until 2009 , while the Kerala Congress (Joseph) was part of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA). Kerala Congress (Nationalist) competed in the 2014 election as part of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). In 2010, the Kerala Congress merged under its then chairman PJ Joseph ( "Kerala Congress (Joseph)" ) with the Kerala Congress (Mani) under KM Mani. According to the decision of the Indian Election Commission, the merged party was not given the name Kerala Congress , which various other groups also claimed, but the name Kerala Congress (M) . The party symbol of the party was not the bike of the Kerala Congress , but the two leaves of the Kerala Congress (Mani) . The party chairman today (2014) is KM Mani.
