Kerling was founded in 1960 by Gustav Kerling. The company primarily processes human hair that has not been damaged by permanent waves or hair coloring . The hair is mainly obtained from southern Europe and Asia. According to the company, hair from India is best for processing because of its high strength. The knotting is mainly done by female workers in Bali, where the company has a branch. Another branch is located in Hungary.

Kerling is a subsidiary of the Japanese company KK Svenson ( 株式会社 ス ヴ ェ ン ソ ン , Kabushiki kaisha Suvenson , Svenson Co., Ltd. ). Kerling's managing director is Yoshinori Kodama ( 児 玉 義 則 , Kodama Yoshinori ) who is also the managing director of Svenson.
