Core division
The nuclear division , ie the division of the cell nucleus of a eukaryotic cell , can occur in two ways:
- In mitosis , the daughter nuclei are genetically identical copies of the mother nucleus.
- With meiosis , the number of chromosomes is halved. This takes place within the framework of sexual reproduction as a compensation for the doubling during fertilization .
The splitting of atomic nuclei , on the other hand, is called nuclear fission .
