The Kerry Woolen Mills are a historical wool spinning and weaving on the Ring of Kerry in Ireland .

history

The Kerry Woolen Mills are one of the last remaining traditional wool processing mills in County Kerry . The company was founded more than 300 years ago. The machines were originally powered by the water power of the Gweestin river via a mill wheel and leather drive belts. The river water was also used to wash and dye the wool. The mill was acquired in 1904 by the Eady family, who had many years of experience in wool processing in Fermanagh and Scotland and who are now the fourth generation to run the mill.

The mill is in a rural location and many of its historic buildings are still in use. The machines still look traditional, although they have been modernized over the years. The wool is spun, dyed and woven in the grounds behind the store, and the finished products are displayed on site. It is a fascinating experience to see the processes such as carding , spinning , weaving and textile finishing as part of a factory tour with which natural fiber textiles and fashion items such as shawls , scarves , wool blankets , tweeds and carpets are manufactured.

Today the company focuses on making its products in traditional colors and designs for a niche market. The products are sold to a large and loyal customer base in the following main segments: manufacturers of clothing and headgear in the British Isles primarily need tweed, hotels and inns purchase special woolen blankets, Irish and foreign retailers procure the products to sell to end customers and there is also a market for specialty products such as equestrian sports. The mill also sells directly to end customers in factory outlets and through its own shops, especially to American tourists who particularly appreciate the quality of traditionally made natural fiber products and who live in a climate zone similar to the Irish, at least on the west coast.
