Chain smoker

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A chain smoker is a consumer of cigarettes or other tobacco products who consumes them almost incessantly. Due to the addictive effects of nicotine, it can be assumed that chain smoking is the extreme form of dependence on it. Cases have become known in which a person smoked around 120–140 cigarettes a day. The phenomenon of “chain smoking” is not very common among people who smoke cigars or pipes .

definition

There is currently no medical definition of the "chain smoker". It may be helpful here that the WHO classifies a user who smokes more than 20 cigarettes per day as a “heavy smoker”.

Risks

Such extreme tobacco consumption is usually associated with striking health problems; not only for the chain smoker, but also for those around him. The problems begin with the fact that people need a certain amount of sleep , during which the level of addictive substances falls due to the processing of toxins and a lack of new intake in the body. Therefore, the addicts have a high need for consumption shortly after waking up, which can also be associated with sleep disorders. Statistically , smokers have a shorter life expectancy anyway ; in the case of chain smokers this drops even further. A high percentage of chain smokers are at risk of developing the relevant cancers (especially lung cancer ) and / or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease during their lifetime . However, since chain smokers are not a scientific term, they are not listed separately in statistics.
