The administrative community Freiberg was an administrative community in the Free State of Saxony . It was located in the center of the district of central Saxony about 34 km east of Chemnitz and about 30 km west of the state capital Dresden . The landscape of the former community area is located in the northern foothills of the Ore Mountains in the valley of the Freiberger Mulde and its surrounding ridges. Federal highways 173 and 101 intersected in the administrative area . The federal motorway 4 runs north of the former community area and can be reached via the Siebenlehn junction (about nineteen kilometers). Freiberg is also on the Chemnitz – Dresden railway line.

With the merger of Bobritzsch and Hilbersdorf to form the municipality of Bobritzsch-Hilbersdorf on January 1, 2012, the administrative community was dissolved. In the course of the dissolution, the industrial area Muldenhütten von Hilbersdorf was ceded to the city of Freiberg without consideration.
