Kfar Tikva

Kfar Tikva ( Hebrew כפר תקוהdt .: Village of Hope) is an Israeli institution near Kirjat Tiw'on , where disabled people live together like a kibbutz .

history

Kfar Tikva was founded in 1963 under the leadership of Siegfried Hirsch by a group of Israelis on the top of a mountain near Kirjat Tiw'on . With the help of German volunteers from the German association “Zedekah e. V. ”and German donors, the implementation of the founder's vision could begin in the same year. The facility was inaugurated in 1964 .

idea

Sigfried Hirsch and his colleagues founded Kfar Tikva on the site of the abandoned kibbutz Givat Zaid. Here Hirsch's idea should become reality. A place where the disabled can live like other people. This idea culminated in the saying Dr. Hirschs on the day of Kfar Tikva's inauguration: “You should live like us!”. So Kfar Tikva sees itself today as a "kibbutz" of a special kind, also or precisely because one does not belong to the kibbutz movement. The handicapped people in the village see themselves as members (Haverim) of this "kibbutz" and take on tasks and duties for the community as far as they can. Since the construction of the village on the site of the former kibbutz Givat Zaid, which took place in 1963 with the help of German volunteers, Kfar Tikva has become something of a figurehead for German-Israeli relations.

structure

The structure of the village basically corresponds to that of a kibbutz. The management consists of parents or ward representatives, employees and representatives of the disabled. This is the main difference to other disabled facilities. In Kfar Tikva, the disabled people living here, who see themselves as members of this “kibbutz”, have a say, also at management level. The elected representatives of the disabled have the right to have a say and to decide B. when filling jobs, projects or accepting new members. Changing work and responsibility for others and the group - that is what makes Kfar Tikva so special.

job

Kfar Tikva provides employment to around 200 disabled people. In addition to the daily work that is necessary in such a facility, e.g. B. gardening or laundry and housekeeping, the leased farms, which are located on the grounds of the village, offer additional jobs.

Commercial enterprises

There is a winery , a dog breeding facility and a candle factory on the Kfar Tikvas site . These companies are leased under the condition that the Haverim secure jobs. The wine from the Kfar Tikva Winery is particularly well known.

The current project is the ceramic workshop. The German Embassy in Tel Aviv made the construction possible through their donation. Production has been running for a few weeks now, and some jobs have been created for the disabled.

Learn

Kfar Tikva was the first disabled institution to convince Haifa University to offer its educational programs for the disabled. Since then, the university has been using the program to train students in social professions and has offered the Chaverim and their families the opportunity to work on an individual learning program together. This resulted in a project that was unique at the time and from which both sides benefit, the university and its students during their training and Kfar Tikva through the special support of its members.

German-Israeli cooperation

Without this collaboration, Kfar Tikva would have been inconceivable. They were German volunteers from the Zedaka e. V., who in 1963 prepared the buildings of the former kibbutz Givat Shaul for the disabled. Since then, Kfar Tikva has been an active and special symbol of German-Israeli and Christian-Jewish cooperation. German, Israeli, Jewish and Christian volunteers work here with the Chaverim. This cooperation is honored again and again by visits from German delegations and the German Foreign Minister.
