Chalil or Khalil Mardam Bey (* 1895 in Damascus , † September 20, 1959 in Damascus; Arabic خليل مردم بك Chalil Mardam Bak , DMG Ḫalīl Mardam Bak ) was a Syrian poet and critic best known as the lyricist of the Syrian national anthem Homat el Diyar .

Life

Khalil Mardam Bey was born into a distinguished family in Damascus. He was one of the descendants of the Ottoman general and grand vizier Lala Kara Mustafa Pascha . As a poet, he was elected head of the Syrian Literary Association founded in 1926, which was annulled by the French. He studied English literature in London and taught Arabic literature at the National Science College in Syria. Among his most famous works wereالديوان al-Diwan andأئمة الأدب A'imat al-Adab . He was also Syrian Foreign Minister from 1953 to 1954 and Chairman of the Arab Scientific Assembly from 1953 until his death in 1959.
