Academy for the Arabic Language in Damascus

The Academy for the Arabic Language in Damascus ( Arabic مجمع اللغة العربية بدمشق, DMG Maǧmaʿ al-luġa al-ʿarabīya bi-Dimašq ) is the oldest scientific institution that is dedicated to the standardization of the Arabic language . It was founded in 1918 by a decree of the Syrian King Faisal I on the model of European academies, in particular the Académie française . The headquarters of the Academy is at the Adliye Madrasa in Damascus , not far from the Umayyad Mosque .

Muhammad Kurd Ali (1876–1953) was co-founder and president from 1919 until his death .

• Prince Mustafa Shahabi (1959–1968)
• Husni Sabh (1968–1986)
• Shaker Al-Fahham (1986-2008)
• Marwan Mahasne (2008–)

Another such institution is the Academy of the Arabic Language in Cairo .
