Khammao Vilai

Khammao Vilai (also: Xiang Mao ; * 1892 in Luang Prabang ; † 1965 ) was Prime Minister of the first post-colonial Laotian government, the Lao Issara 1945-49. After independence he held ministerial offices until 1955.

Life

Khammao Vilai received his higher education in France at the École Pratique du Commerce. In 1917 he joined the French colonial administration. There he rose to governor of Vientiane (laot .: Viang Chan ) until 1941 . He kept this position after the Japanese on 9/10. March 1945 the Vichy-loyal French were arrested.

On October 12, 1945, he became Prime Minister of the anti-colonial Lao Issara government, which wanted to prevent the colonial rulers from re-conquering Indochina . However, he had to flee from the looming defeat and established a government in exile in Bangkok . On July 19, 1949, the Franco-Laotian Treaty was signed, which should make Laos an independent member within the Union française . He dissolved the Lao Issara on October 24, 1949, after which its members returned home.

Together with his former minister for public buildings, Prince Suvanna Phūmā , he founded the Progressive Party ( Phak Kaonā ). In 1950 he became Minister of Justice and Health in the royal government under Phoui Sananikone . He kept this post in the first cabinet of Suvanna Phūmā.

In 1955 he was appointed as one of the twelve members of the royal council ( Thipuksā Phramahākaxāt ).
