The Derbent Khanate was a state in what is now Dagestan in Russia , which existed from 1747 to 1806. The area stretched along the coast of the Caspian Sea and also included parts of what is now Azerbaijan as far as Sumqayıt . The capital was Derbent .

history

After the Russian Empire had conquered Derbent from Safavid Persia in the Russo-Persian War in 1722 , the city was awarded to him in the Saint Petersburg Peace Treaty of 1723. During a triumphal procession in Moscow, Peter I had the silver keys of the iron gates of Derbent carried forward. In 1736 Derbent was returned from Russia to Persia under Nadir Shah . When he died, an independent khanate came into being around Derbent.

During a Russian campaign to Persia in 1796, it was captured by an army under Valerian Subov , but then abandoned. In 1806 Derbent was conquered again and the khanate was annexed by the Russian Empire, which was accepted by Persia in the Peace of Gulistan in 1813 .
