Khmara Island ( Russian Остров Хмары Ostrow Chmary ) is a small island off the coast of the East Antarctic Queen Marie Land . In the group of Haswell Islands it is 1.5 km south of Haswell Island .
Aerial photographs of the US American Operation Highjump (1946–1947) were used to map them. Soviet scientists carried out a new mapping in 1956 and named it after the tractor driver I. F. Chmara, who died in January 1956 near Mirny Station when his tractor collapsed through an ice sheet that was too thin. The Antarctic Names Committee of Australia translated this name into English in 1960.
