Emergence

Pebbles in k42

On March 1, 2007, the Medienhaus am See k42 (for Karlstrasse 42 ) was opened in Friedrichshafen. Before that, the building had had different functions one after the other; most recently it was the seat of the Kreissparkasse. In 2002 the local council decided to organize an international architectural competition for the realignment of the building together with the investor. After disagreements between the interests of the investor and the city, this plan was settled. The Schmid company from Baltringen became a new investor. The architects Braunger & Wörtz from Ulm planned a creative renovation.

The new building is now based on the functional basic structure of the old building; it was gutted and the superstructures removed. A transparent skeletal structure was created. In the plans of the architects, an event hall was planned from the beginning, which should have an “unform” that would counterbalance the exact lines of the building. In 2005 the architects chose a Bodensee pebble as a model for this hall. The name "Kiesel" has been retained since then. The outer shell is adapted to the materiality of a ground sea pebble: there are irregular shells made of glass fiber concrete. Since the pebble is a prototype, it had to be built from expanded polystyrene on a 1: 1 scale. Like a puzzle, the model was then broken down into approx. 100 individual parts, which were later used as molds for the manufacture of the fiberglass-reinforced concrete shell. The pebble has been the eye-catcher at the port since its completion.

Inside the pebble there is a technically well-equipped studio stage with space for 100 spectators. Besides the Graf-Zeppelin-Haus and the Fischbach train station, this is the third permanent venue of the Friedrichshafen Cultural Office. The program is based almost exclusively on guest performances. In addition to around 100 events that the Kulturbüro Friedrichshafen organizes each year, a smaller part is programmed by the media company.

Drama productions, readings and concerts are mainly offered in the Kiesel, but also dance, puppet theater, (video) performances and radio plays. In addition, a film festival has been growing since 2008 (“Now or never!”) With works by young filmmakers from Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Also since 2008 there has been an ever expanding educational theater offer with several youth clubs and various workshops. In 2009, the Kulturbüro was awarded the ASSITEJ organizer prize for its outstanding offer in the area of children's and youth theater in the Kiesel .
