Gravel compas
The Dutch company Kieskompas (German: Wahlkompass ) was founded in 2007 at the Free University of Amsterdam by André Krouwel. The aim of the Kieskompas projects is to prepare complex interrelationships for a broad audience. The core business of the company includes the development of online voting advice applications , which prepare political information for voters.
Methodical approach for online voting aids
Kieskompas' online voting aids are based on a two-dimensional political spectrum , from which a two-axis coordinate system results. First about 30 statements on relevant topics of the election campaign must be formulated. To determine the positions of the political actors, parties (in parliamentary systems ) or candidates (in presidential systems ) are positioned on the basis of publicly available evidence (e.g. from election programs , party websites or statements by top candidates ). The position results from the degree of agreement with the 30 statements, which is made using a five-point scale . All source references are visible in the application so that users of the voting aid can check them. On the basis of the classification of the parties, a position in the political spectrum is then calculated for each party. Finally, the users also answer the 30 selected statements and then receive an individual political position that they can compare with the party positions.
Projects
Since the publication of the first election aid in 2006, Kieskompas has supported around 40 projects worldwide. In Germany, Kieskompas has developed online voting aids for the 2009 and 2014 European elections , the 2013 and 2017 federal elections and the 2017 state elections in Lower Saxony. In February 2018 Kieskompas published the Wahl-Kompass Frankfurt, the first scientific electoral aid for a mayor election in Germany, which is also available in English. At the Kieskompas project to the Canadian general election in 2011 and Clifton van der Linden has worked, then the vote under the name Compass has started marketing similar dialers, including the choice of Navi of RTL Group in Germany.
Differences to Wahl-O-Maten
Kieskompas sees itself as a provider of an alternative offer to the widespread election aid StemWijzer, which is offered in Germany under the name Wahl-O-Mat by the Federal Agency for Civic Education . One difference is that with the Kieskompas smaller parties only meet the requirements in exceptional cases in order to be considered. In contrast to Wahl-O-Mat, the presentation of the results enables a rough comparison of the parties with one another. The text references of the parties are publicly available, so that parties have to refer to existing positions and cannot provide separate explanations. Kieskompas offers integration into other websites via an iFrame, whereas the Wahl-O-Mat can only be accessed directly via a link.
