Voting advice application
A voting advice application ( VAA for short , German: "Wahl -empfehlungs -App" or "-hilfe") is a web application that helps make decisions in political elections .
Such an application can help participants in political elections to find a candidate or party that comes closest to their political views.
VAAs have been used since the end of the 20th century. The Dutch StemWijzer, for example, was still a paper version in 1989 and has been available as an online version since 1998. In Germany, the Wahl-O-Mat based on the StemWijzer was introduced in 2002 . In the election campaign for the 2014 European elections , national election recommendation applications were established in 14 states of the European Union .
Systematics and methods
The basic functionality common to the VAAs is the possibility of comparing one's own opinions with those of the parties up for election by evaluating politically pre-selected political theses. VAAs can differ in terms of many characteristics.
With Wahl-O-Mat, for example, the theses are prepared by an editorial team made up of young people (under 26 years of age) and scientists, sent to the parties who are standing for election and answered by representatives. In the case of the Kieskompas, on the other hand, the detailed statements on the theses are not freely answered by the parties, but are supported by sources . At DeinWal.de, on the other hand, past, real votes in parliaments are used as the basis for the theses.
