The WahlSwiper is a cross-platform election recommendation application for smartphones , Amazon's voice assistant Alexa and as a web application in the browser , which offers decision-making aid for currently pending Bundestag and state elections and was first offered for the 2017 Bundestag election . The app is operated by the advertising agency MOVACT. The app uses the concept of the dating app Tinder to guide users through the questionnaire . For the first time for the 2019 European elections , the decision-making aid was also launched in other countries, where it appears under the name VoteSwiper in countries that are not German-speaking.

The questions of the WahlSwiper are worked out in cooperation with various bodies, including the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich , the Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung or the United Nations Society Nürnberg eV

function

The user takes a position on around 30 political questions. The application only offers the user “yes” and “no” as possible answers. The user can also answer the questions in a playful way by simply “swiping” left or right. There is also the option of skipping theses if you do not want to answer them. Skipped questions are not taken into account when calculating the result. For each question, users have the opportunity to watch short animated explanatory videos that briefly explain the topic.

The user can then select the parties for whom an evaluation is to be carried out. In contrast to the established Wahl-O-Mat , which allows a maximum of eight parties for evaluation, there is no such limit with the WahlSwiper. Your own answers are then compared with the authorized answers of various parties. As an evaluation, the user receives a bar chart that shows which party he or she agrees with to what extent, as well as a table with a detailed comparison of their own answers with the statements of the selected parties.

Both editions of the WahlSwiper take into account all parties admitted to the respective election who have answered the questionnaires.

Users also have the option of saving their results so that they can compare them over the course of the election campaign.

use

The WahlSwiper for the 2017 Bundestag election was used by over 500,000 people who answered a total of over 20 million questions.

criticism

The WahlSwiper received mostly positive reviews after its publication for the 2017 federal election. The innovative design and the helpful explanatory videos for each question were particularly appreciated.

The function of being able to save results is rated as practical, as is the possibility of reading further information at the end, such as the election program.

Among other things, the strong simplification is criticized, because “yes” and “no” are often not sufficient answer options. Thereupon the possibility was created to skip questions and to adjust individual answers afterwards.

On 15 May 2019, the party sued volts Germany during the European elections in 2019 , the Federal Agency for Civic Education , which the Wahl-O-Mat operates, for contempt of equal opportunities, since the restriction discriminates against a maximum of eight selectable parties small parties. In the course of public communication, Volt Germany listed the WahlSwiper as a constitutional alternative.

Awards

At the international Webby Awards 2018 the WahlSwiper was nominated in the category “Public Service & Activism” and honored with a “Webby For Good”, an award for projects that are particularly committed to the common good.

At the German Design Awards 2019 , which are presented by the German Design Council , it received the “Special Mention” award in the “Excellent Communications Design” category.
