The Kietzer Graben is an artificially created drainage ditch in the 18th century in what was then the Fischerkietz of Köpenick. Since the Berlin district reform in 2001, the ditch has belonged to the Köpenick district in the Treptow-Köpenick district .

location

The Kietzer Graben connects the Dahme and Spree rivers on the southeastern edge of the Köpenicker Fischerkietz . It is around 360 meters long and is currently (as of November 2015) spanned by three bridges: the Kietzer Bridge , a road bridge in the course of Müggelheimer Straße as a western continuation of the Long Bridge , the Kietzgraben Bridge, over which the Kietzer Straße runs and the bridge over which the Landjägerstraße runs.

history

After the Spree was regulated by some locks in its course in Berlin in the 18th century , the partial damming in the already existing buildings in the fishing village of Köpenick had an effect due to rising water levels. A water connection between the two rivers surrounding the housing estate created level compensation. This made the northern Köpenick old town an island. The moat was of no importance for shipping.

In 2003, the Treptow-Köpenick district administration, together with the Berlin Senate , planned the construction of another bridge that would lead the Katzengraben – Claus-Dieter-Sprink-Weg over the Kietzer Graben. It should be 24 meters long, 2.65 meters wide and usable by pedestrians and cyclists. Planning and financing were unclear for a long time, which is why the construction of the structure, now known as Kietzgrabensteg , was only decided in 2015. In 2015, the Senate provided the district office with a sum of 412,000 euros for the construction  . However, it will end somewhere at the official grove where there are no specific goals. On the north side, an unpaved footpath in front of the Köpenicker Heimatmuseum in the vicinity of the library provides access to the bridge. Originally, a beer garden and event areas were supposed to attract visitors to the Amtswäldchen . At least as a walking shortcut, it will have a right to exist. Many Köpenickers criticize the construction project because around 140 bridges in the district are in need of renovation, for which no money is available.

The Kietzer Graben would have to be rehabilitated parallel to the construction of the new bridge; together with the Kietzgrabensteg it is supposed to improve the quality of stay for the residents.
