prehistory

Area with mass graves

In 1999, the Kigali City Council decided to create a burial site for the unidentified victims of the 1994 genocide where they could be buried with dignity. To this end, eight mass graves with victims from hundreds of shallow mass graves in Kigali were laid on the site of the later memorial site from 2001 . Later three more mass graves were created, which consist of three meter deep concrete burial chambers. Inside them are coffins that contain the human remains of up to 50 victims. The method of burial in coffins is a symbol of dignity. A total of around 250,000 Tutsi murdered in Kigali and the surrounding area are buried here.
