Kikuyu is a city in Kenya about 20 kilometers west of the capital Nairobi . It had around 324,000 inhabitants in 2019.

It emerged from the fort founded in 1891 near Dagoretti by Major Eric Smith, a British officer. The fort was on the caravan route from Mombasa to Uganda and was primarily intended to supply the numerous caravans of the Imperial British East Africa Company . Until the end of the colonial era, Kikuyu was therefore also called Fort Smith.

Kikuyu is home to the famous Alliance High School , which was attended by eminent people, such as the writer Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o .
