Kilburn and The High Roads was a British rock and roll - band , which in 1970 by Ian Dury was founded.

It was also Dury's first band. The group released two albums before breaking up in 1977. In the immediate aftermath, Ian Dury founded the much better known band The Blockheads.

Kilburn and the High Roads were one of the top performing bands on the London pub rock scene in the early 1970s. At the same time, the formation was the beginning of the cult of songwriter and actor Ian Dury, who would later become an important representative of the New Wave and with the band Ian Dury and the Blockheads could book international successes as well as a number one hit .

history

Dury founded Kilburn and the High Roads in 1970. At the time he was a lecturer at Canterbury College of Art. The band consisted most of the time of Ian Dury as singer and songwriter, Russell Hardy as pianist, Nick Cash (Keith Lucas) as guitarist and Humphrey Ocean as bassist.

They played their first concert in December 1971 at the Croydon School of Art in London . At that time their sound sounded like the usual rock'n'roll, whereby they already used elements of R&B , jazz and reggae and the band members were partly practiced in the approach of new improvisation music (Khan, Hardy, Hart and Day also played in theatrical improvisation ensembles like the People Band ). This sound was supported by Dury's Cockney accent, which he retained all the time. Not least because of that accent and Ian Dury's slight physical limitation, based on early polio, they were an interesting act, according to their manager Dave Robinson: “They were much more theatrical and looked like a circus troupe. And it was mainly Ian Dury who did his art school thing and put on music hall theater and comedy on stage. "

After the first reshuffles, they played regular concerts in all popular London pubs in 1973 and became more and more popular, at least in that scene of the early 1970s. In July 1973 they also signed a contract with Raft, a sub-label of Warner. Guitarist Keith Lucas (later played with the punk rock band 999 ) also joined the group at this time . At that time, around 1974, Kilburn and the High Roads composed and produced a complete album, which however fell victim to the end of Raft and was never released.

The debut album Handsome was released in 1975. At that time, the group was considered by many music critics “as the best English live band of those days. The Kilburns didn't take prisoners. ”Unfortunately, the album didn't get the attention it would have received a year or two earlier if it was released.

The band's second album was released in 1977, it is called Wotabunch! . After the release of this album, the band broke up. In the same year Ian Dury founded the band Ian Dury and The Blockheads, with whom he was able to celebrate much greater success. In 1983 he produced the Best Of compilation The Best Of Kilburn & the High Roads which is based solely on the title of the two albums.
