Kilianstein

Kilianstein is the name of a free-standing rock needle on the Hopfenberg in the eastern part of the Sembach Valley , about 800 meters east of the (upper) village of Winterstein on the northern slope of the Thuringian Forest .

The approximately 15 meter high rock is at a height of about 500  m above sea level. NN . It consists of relatively brittle quartz porphyry and is rarely visited by sport climbers. Several paths are signposted, routes have been set up on the rock, and there is a summit book on the tower.

The shape of the rock, which is quite unusual in this area, stimulated the imagination of ordinary people centuries ago, which often combined incomprehensible phenomena and mysterious places with the work of the devil. According to a Winterstein legend, this rock was created when the devil rammed his walking stick into the ground here because of the success of the missionary Saint Kilian , who was sent to the area , and the tip of the walking stick got stuck there.
