The Hopfenberg is a forested mountain in the area of the city of Waltershausen , district Winterstein in the district of Gotha .
With a height of 536.1 m above sea level. HN , the Hopfenberg forms the eastern boundary of the Emsetal in the municipality. The mountain, which was probably cleared on the western and northern flanks, was used for hop growing in the Middle Ages, from which the name of the mountain was derived. The rocky southern slope of the Hopfenberg towers over the Sembach valley by around 125 meters. The name of the Kilianstein located in the eastern Sembach valley reminds of the conversion of the pagan missionary Kilian. The rock face at the stone staircase is impressive, there was at times a quarry, the rock removed by blasting was used in forest road construction.
