Kilshane Abbey (Kilsonna) is a former Cistercian abbey in the townland of Kilshane ( Irish Cill Sheáin , "John's Church") in the parish ( Parish ) Ballingarry ( Baile an Gharraí ) in County Limerick in Ireland , about which little is known.
history
The abbey was founded in 1198 as a subsidiary of Corcomroe Abbey and thus belonged to the affiliation of the Clairvaux Primary Abbey . In 1273 the abbot Florentius O'Tigernach became bishop of Kilfenora. Probably in the 14th century the abbey was united with Corcomroe Abbey.
Occasionally Kilshane Abbey is thought to be Kilshanny Abbey in County Clare , where there was a St. Augustine Abbey. However, this is likely to be a mix-up (cf. Janauschek).
Buildings and plant
Apparently the system has completely disappeared.
