Kim Sa-in (born March 30, 1956 in Poŭn , Ch'ungch'ŏngbuk-do ) is a South Korean poet and literary critic .

Life

Kim Sa-in was born on March 30, 1956 in Poŭn, a small village in the middle of Korea. He attended a top regional high school and studied Korean literature at one of the best universities in Seoul. He currently teaches poetry as a lecturer in arts and creative writing at Seoul University . Given such an elitist résumé, one might assume that his poems also reflected academic life: perfect and flawless. However, this is not the case. The aesthetic value of Kim's poems stems from their 'neatly crafted' nature, while at the same time they are 'the product of extreme self-denial imposed to contain the revolt of endlessly seething emotions', as one critic put it.

Kim made his debut in the journal Poetry and Economics (시 와 경제) in 1982, a time when South Korea was under military rule. He chose to respond to the pain of that period instead of ignoring it. His poems take on a disciplined form, but their subjects are people from simple circles, often of inadequate character or even of dull nature. Kim admitted that he sees human warmth in naivety and clumsiness rather than perfection and flatness.

Kim describes poetry writing as 'endlessly questioning things'. But he also emphasizes that the poet must not only ask questions: he must also find answers and actively put them into practice. In the same way, reading poems means becoming part of them and partaking in them with your whole body. Kim's poems involve engagement with these, both on the part of the reader and on the part of the author. Because according to Kim, lyric poetry that you don't fully surrender to is not poetry.
