Children need us

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The association children need us e. V. based in Mülheim an der Ruhr was founded in 2001. The organization has set itself the goal of providing humanitarian aid for people in need, especially for children from war and crisis areas. The purpose of the statutes is achieved in particular by providing medical care for Afghan children from the poorest of backgrounds and with the most serious illnesses.

The commitment of the institution

Since 2002, the association has organized regular transport flights for sick children from Kabul to Germany. Here the children were distributed to hospitals nationwide and medically treated free of charge or with the help of donations. The children were then accommodated in German and Turkish host families for a period of up to six months during an additional recovery period. By January 2009 more than 450 children could be helped.

In order to provide the local children with a basic education, the stone house for 85 children (as of January 2009) was opened in Kabul in March 2007 . This offers accommodation and training opportunities.

The chairman under fire

The association was founded in 2001 by Markus Dewender. At the end of 2007 it became known that his honorary doctorate had been bought and that the Polish doctorate in economics had been faked. He then stepped down for the first time on January 8, 2008. After the media fuss about his person, he was re-elected chairman of the association in the same year.

Subsequently, the allegations against the facility increased and Dewender was accused, among other things, that

  • he placed an Afghan girl in the care of a convicted sex offender
  • he had violated immigration laws when Afghan children entered the country
  • he is unsuitable as a guardian for the children because he disregards agreements and brings the children into situations that are no longer responsible
  • that the children who flown out to Germany were very often placed in Christian denominational schools.

Thereupon Dewender resigned the chairmanship again in November 2009 - only to run again a few months later and be re-elected.

  • On October 2, 2012, Report Munich reported on Afghan parents whose children who were placed with the organization did not return to Afghanistan even after years.

Awards

  • At the end of 2007 the association was awarded the German Children's Prize in the “Special Prize” category
  • On November 29, 2007 the association in Düsseldorf received a Bambi in the category "Social Commitment"
