Children in Vienna (KIWI), originally “Wiener Kinderrettungswerk”, the Vienna regional association of the umbrella organization Österreichisches Kinderrettungswerk , is an Austrian association and one of the largest private Viennese providers of age-extended groups, kindergarten and after-school care groups for children from one to ten years.

history

In 1948 (the association was officially registered on January 28, 1949) the “Wiener Kinderrettungswerk” (KRW) was founded by senior school officer Alexander Lichal . The aim was to alleviate the plight of the children of the post-war period through admission to kindergartens and after-school care centers or recreational care in the federal states. The original goals were "a warm roof over your head and regular food". In the first financial year there were 23 kindergartens and 11 after-school care groups in which 1,100 children were cared for.

The 1960s brought organizational and pedagogical changes with them, with the establishment of a specialist library, further training for employees, improved equipment and first approaches to public relations. In 1969 the first specialist conference “Wages and Punishments in Education” took place.

The “ pill kink ” of the 1970s led to a sharp decline in the number of children in KRW facilities. The result - more emphasis on pedagogical quality and advanced training.

Eva Petrik was elected as the new chairwoman of the Vienna Children's Rescue Service in 1985 and Monika Franta was appointed as the first manager. The “Wiener Kinderrettungswerk” was renamed to “Children in Vienna”, or KIWI for short. A logo, a green and yellow wind turbine, supported the new look. A pedagogical consultant was hired, the first KIWI publication was published, a survey was organized under the title “Children: Abandoned - Deported” and, with the project “Save Gstätten”, fallow land was transformed into natural playgrounds.

The first mission statement was developed in 1992. The KIWI wind turbine has been replaced by a new logo - a colorful puzzle made of different, colored building blocks.

In 1994 Ingrid Fröhlich took over the economic management of KIWI. Since 1997 she has shared responsibility with Monika Riha as educational director.

In 1997, KIWI implemented a pilot project - “ Age- Extended Groups ” - by introducing joint care for children between the ages of one and six years.

Since 1998, the number of KIWI locations has grown from 12 to 71, the number of employees from 108 to just over 1,000 and the number of children looked after from 700 to around 5,400.

In 2006 and 2007, KIWI presented two specialist studies on the topic of “Economic Effects of Childcare Facilities in Vienna”.

In 2014, in cooperation with the Koblenz University of Applied Sciences in Vienna, the first academic course for elementary education in Austria began.
